Chapter 26

It’s a lot of information to digest, and I realize my legs are getting stiff from sitting so long. When I check my watch, I can't believe that more than three hours have gone by. By the time we leave the coffee house it’s late, nearing midnight. We’re walking down a deserted side street when it happens.

One minute it’s just the two of us calmly chatting as we head to my house. The next second, the world goes crazy. Daniel is violently jumped from behind as we stroll side by side. What takes place next I can’t say for sure, it happens so freaking fast. Daniel reacts so quickly it’s as if he was expecting the attack. He spins around, kicks his assailant, and pushes me out of the fray in the same fluid motion. If I wasn't so petrified I might have been impressed by his fighting skills. But why is he being assaulted? What the hell is going on here?

He and his attacker face each other. I’m backing away, unsure of what I should do when Daniel calls out to me, "Sweetheart, you like vampires? This guy here is about as close as you’ll probably ever get to one—ain't he sexy?"

Vampires? Is Daniel losing his mind? I look at the guy who never takes his eyes off Daniel. He is tall and rangy. His face is a sickly pallor; the skin is yellowish, but his lips are blood red. His eyes are hands-down the scariest: they are flat, dead, zero animation behind them. He has bony hands with long claw-like fingernails, and I can smell him from where I stand. It is a musty smell, like old clothes in a thrift shop. I back farther away from them, scared out of my wits and not knowing what to do to help Daniel.

Daniel steps closer to his adversary, still in a defensive posture, "C'mon then, you have a problem with me? Bring it on." He’s taunting the scary dude, egging him on.

The next few minutes are terrifying yet oddly mesmerizing. It’s like watching some bizarre kind of violent ballet. They’re kicking, dodging—even flipping: it looks staged, almost like special effects.

As I stare in a catatonic stupor, it occurs to me that this man—Daniel—is being slowly revealed to me in layers, like peeling back an onion. When first I met him, I thought he was an arrogant guy who dressed impeccably well and was used to having his own way in everything.

Each day, each hour I get to know him better, I uncover a new layer to him. Right now, I’m seeing his courage, brute strength, fighting skills, athleticism… but most of all, his ability and desire to protect me. It jolts me back to life.

They are fairly evenly matched, and I wonder how long this fight will go on and fear who will prevail when Daniel quickly ends it by grabbing the guy’s head and twisting it sharply. I hear the sickening snap of his neck, and immediately
